WASHINGTON, D.C  – Today, Rep. Ruben J. Kihuen released the statement below following President Trump’s announcement that his administration will terminate the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

“I am disappointed that this administration has decided to end the DACA program and trample over our country’s values and in the process shatter the hopes and dreams of 800,000 of young people who have benefited from this program.

“I was once undocumented, and now I am a Member of Congress. DACA beneficiaries are teachers, students, young professionals, and servicemembers who provide significant economic and cultural benefits to our country. All these young people want is a chance for a better life and greater opportunity. DREAMers are not criminals and they should not be targets for deportation. The United States is a nation of immigrants, and our immigrant communities make us a better country.

“From labeling immigrants as criminals and advocating for building a wall, to calling for a ban on immigrants from primarily Muslim countries, and shifting ICE enforcement operations to target non-criminal immigrants for deportation, this administration has proven time and again their only goal is to foster anti-immigrant and divisive rhetoric. I will continue to fight tooth and nail to protect DREAMers from deportation and to fix our broken immigration system.”
