WASHINGTON, D.C.  – Today, Rep. Ruben J. Kihuen issued the statement below following the Trump Administration’s 2018 Budget Request to Congress:

“Today, the Trump administration released its budget titled ‘A New Foundation For American Greatness,’ but skim past the first few pages and you will see a common trend: elimination and reduction of vital programs. These cuts show a blatant disregard for the wellbeing of Nevadans and do little to help rebuild our country’s economy. Not only does this budget set aside funds to restart the disastrous Yucca Mountain project, but it would also raid the SNPLMA (Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act) special account, robbing Nevadans of $230 million meant to fund conservation projects in the state that directly benefit them. These cuts are indefensible and immoral – gutting programs like SNAP that helps hardworking Americans put food on the table, eliminating the 21st Century Community Learning Centers program which helps provide after-school academic enrichment for children in low-income areas, and stripping Medicaid of valuable funding that helps 18,000 Veterans in Nevada get healthcare coverage. If this is President Trump’s attempt to “Make America Great Again” he should either rethink his strategy or change his slogan to reflect reality.”
