WASHINGTON, D.C.  – Today, Representative Ruben J. Kihuen released the below statement in response to comments by Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke who visited Pahrump, Nevada on Monday:

"While I am pleased to hear that Secretary Zinke has decided to visit Gold Butte and Basin and Range before making a decision on the reduction of these state treasures, I urge him to not make changes that will impact Nevada’s natural beauty and harm our state’s economy, cultural heritage and ecology. Our state has fought for years to protect these special places, and most Nevadans agree that making changes would be a serious mistake. Earlier this month I sent a letter to Secretary Zinke, calling on him to listen to Nevadans who believe in maintaining and protecting Gold Butte and Basin and Range – rather than make changes that would impact our state’s natural beauty. It may be that Secretary Zinke has no ‘preconceived ideas’ about these monuments, but I guarantee that Nevadans certainly have some thoughts for him.”

Representative Kihuen sent a letter to Secretary Zinke urging him not to make any changes to Basin and Range and Gold Butte national monuments. Full text of the letter can be found here.
