WASHINGTON, D.C.  – Today, Representative Ruben J. Kihuen released the statement below following a meeting between Secretary of Homeland Security John Kelly and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus:

“The administration claims to only arrest “bad hombres,” but ICE’s own data shows an increase in deportations among nonviolent offenders or immigrants with no criminal record. We will not stand for an immigration policy focused on breaking up immigrant families. The public has a right to know basic information on ICE detainees and facility populations to ensure the agency is targeting only those individuals who truly seek to harm the United States and its citizens. It’s disconcerting that at the same time the administration continues to round up mothers and children, House Republicans are proposing $1.6 billion for the construction of a southern border wall. Republicans in Congress should start focusing on fixing issues that matter to everyday Americans and stop recklessly spending money to double down on their divisive, anti-immigrant rhetoric.”
